Estate Grenache

Monterey

This wine comes from a small vineyard on the Chalone Bench off the Gavilan Mountains at about 1,800 feet elevation, near the Pinnacles National Park within Monterey County. Vines grow on the same type of sparse, reddish soil underlain by limestone as produces the great French Burgundies along the Cote d’Or. Thus each bottle is filled with the essence of the soil – the French gout de terrior – which gives the wine a fullness of bouquet and flavor unique to this vineyard.

Tasting Notes

The Chalone 2023 Grenache opens with an inviting nose of cherry spice and warm vanilla, accented by a subtle, aromatic touch of anise. On the palate, this full-bodied wine reveals a remarkably rich mid-palate and deeply persistent cherry flavors that linger from start to finish. A final hint of allspice adds complexity to the finish, rounding out a profile that is both powerful and elegantly balanced.

The Chalone 2022 Grenache is defined by strawberry jam, hints of cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove spice. The palate is led by fruit-forward notes of raspberry and mulberry while still holding onto the savory minerality that is unique to Chalone Vineyard’s terroir. This is a lighter expression of Grenache with medium tannins and a pleasant oaky finish.

Chalone Vineyard is planted between 1,650 and 1,800 feet of elevation, on top of the Gavilan Mountains on the eastern side of the Salinas Valley. We hand harvest our Grenache grapes from the Strip and Puesta blocks of Chalone Vineyard. We combine a combination of Old-World and NewWorld styles to create a Grenache that is unique to the terroir of our estate.
